Liberal MP: Tamils “fighting for a right cause”

Not that he supports terrorism, just anything for Liberal votes:

A Toronto-area Liberal MP was criticized Thursday [March 5] for speaking at a rally on Parliament Hill surrounded by flags bearing the militaristic emblem of the Tamil Tigers, a banned terrorist organization in Canada.
A video posted on YouTube shows Gurbax Singh Malhi, MP for Bramalea-Gore-Malton, telling demonstrators waving Tamil Tigers flags that, “I’d like to let you know I’m helping you guys. I’m behind you because you are fighting for a right cause.”
The protesters then chanted: “Freedom fighters, Tamil Tigers.”
During question period, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Peter Kent said he was “sickened by the pandering of a Liberal member on the front lawn of Parliament to a flagrant display of the symbols of a listed terrorist organization.” [Thanks to the Conservative government, after the Liberals refused to list the Tigers; and the World Tamil Movement has also been listed since June 2008.]
Thursday night, Malhi said he had not planned to speak at the rally, but was passing by and decided to say a few words.
He later issued a statement in which he said he regretted speaking at the rally.
“To the best of my knowledge, the group organizing this rally has no history of association with terror or the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam (LTTE). Although a number of attendees at this rally chose to wave LTTE flags, I did not realize the significance of these flags, nor was I aware that other speakers made statements in support of the LTTE,” the statement said.
“I deeply regret that my attendance at this rally was misunderstood by some as a demonstration of my support (expressed or implied) of terror, or of a terrorist organization.”
He said his comments concerned the plight of civilians caught in fighting between the Sri Lankan forces and the Tamil Tigers [at last on the verge of complete military defeat–maybe one can “win” against an insurgency if one is willing to stick with it].
“My concern is innocent people, you know. They are killing the civilians,” he said. “I just came out of the bus and I think, what’s happening?”
Asked about the many Tamil Tigers flags visible at the event, he replied: “I came out of the bus, I don’t even know. I don’t even notice anything.”..

Maybe he’s just a dim bulb. Right. From Steve Janke:

Does Gurbax Singh Malhi take Michael Ignatieff for a fool?
When an MP who spent the almost the first thirty years of his life in India earning a degree in Politics and History suddenly claims to have no understanding of the significance of the flag of the Tamil Tigers, something just doesn’t add up…

The video:

Some party, those Liberals. More from a 2006 National Post editorial:

[…]
Human Rights Watch has a theory: “In Canada, the Tamil community forms a powerful voting bloc, and many members of Parliament from ridings in the Toronto area are dependent on Tamil votes. Some Canadian Tamils suggest that as a result, many members of Parliament are reluctant to address LTTE intimidation.”
This damning statement implicates the Liberal Party of Canada, which has reaped a bounty of Toronto-area ridings through its the assiduous efforts to pander to Tamil interests to an extent that is unacceptable both to Canada’s international obligations, and it turns out, to the security of its own citizens. In 2000, after then-finance minister Paul Martin, and then-minister of international development Maria Minna appeared at a Toronto-area event hosted by a Tamil group that the U.S. State Department has identified as a front for the Tamil Tigers, Reform MPs who questioned the Liberal ministers were accused of racism. But who are the real racists here?

  1. Don’t forget Jason Kenney and Stockwell Day and their support of the banned terrorist group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) and also known as Mujahedin e Khalq (MEK).
Malhi was at a pro-Tamil rally at which some pro-Tamil Tiger flags were flown. He should not have done that and he apologized.
Kenney however actually spoke at a rally on Parliament Hill specifically organized to support the terrorist PMOI/MEK: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20060824/kenney_rally_060824/20060824?hub=TopStories And had his photograph supporting the terrorist group appear on the website of their political arm: http://ncr-iran.org/content/view/1275/128/
Yes, that would be the same terrorist group – PMOI/MEK – that Stockwell Day has spoken out in favour of a number of times, including in the House of Commons and to which Day has sent his “best wishes”: http://tinyurl.com/b2srr3
So you tell me. Which is worse? Which is more pro-terrorist? Attending a rally where someone holds up a Tamil Tigers flag? or campaigning for and speaking at rallies for an internationally registered and Canadian registered terrorist organization and trying to get them de-listed as a terrorist group?
