“Why is Pat Buchanan defending Hitler?”

So asks Rick Moran. I think I know why.

  1. He’s the inheritor of the Lindbergh and America First movement.
He expresses the extreme version of a tenet that runs throughout American political culture, the one of non-interventionism and neutrality when it comes to the old politics of Europe. Not unlike Washington’s warning in his farewell address that America should keep out of Europe’s diplomatic machinations. It’s also manifest in Wilson’s 14 points – that secret back room diplomacy was the root of WWI.
There may be some merit to the US as republic, separate and distinct from old world politics. It unfortunate that Buchanan is one of its standard bearers.

  2. Back in 2000, when he left the GOP to run for President on the Reform Party ticket, it occurred to me that Pitchfork Pat is an American version of P.G. Wodehouse’s Roderick Spode. He’s a bully and a blowhard, but very much of the fringe.
