Gay rights, Iranian-style

Imagine Conservative-ruled Canada or the Republican-ruled United States – or, God forbid, Israel – mandating the death penalty for homosexuality but allowing sex-change operations as a kind of loophole.
Then, imagine left-wing bloggers holding up this policy as an example of moderation and progress.

  1. Moderation? Progress? Pah! Not so long as the mullahs and Ahmadinejad are at the wheel. I just found it remarkable that Teheran is now the sex-change capital of the world. Who’d a’ thunk it?
Both Islam and Christianity are practised as mediaeval religions in too many venues. I’d say the extremist Islamists in Iran and elsewhere have moved forward from the 7th century to, say, the 12th. But the Catholic Church is obviously lingering somewhere in the pre-Enlightenment era as well.

  2. Okay, I wouldn’t have guessed that Tehran is the sex-change capital of the world, but, as with Ayatollah Khomeini’s “enlightened” views toward barnyard sex, it’s a reminder that there are very different cultural norms.

  3. I’m not so sure I’d like to imagine any of that. Reality is tough enough to handle, with its twisted trends. If we are to be the “salt of the earth”, then this Thanksgiving we’re dosed with far too much poultry seasoning. There’s a lot of turkey gas being passed off as politics.

  4. Surely if you are a male in Iran, all you have to do is put on the full Burka to become a women, no-one would ever know!.
The Catholic church maybe backward but it is mostly irrelevant now, and there are no Catholic theocracies around anymore, unlike the many Muslim theocracies .
